Romans 10:13 Devotional: How to Turn Your Eyes Back to Jesus When Anxiety Takes Over
Sometimes, my biggest problem isn’t the situation itself… But rather where I’m looking.
I tend to spend so much time overthinking what could possibly go wrong, obsessing over what I should do next, or trying to figure out how to fix something… The more I try to strategize, the more anxious I get.
In those moments, my thoughts and feelings take the driver’s seat before I even realize it. But when I pause, choose to turn my focus back to Jesus, and remember who He truly is… His peace starts to settle in.
Jesus is the Word who became flesh and came close. He knows every fear, every question, and every messy situation I haven’t figured out yet. And He’s been with me all along.
The Comfort of Calling His Name
When thoughts are racing and we feel stuck in loop, faith often looks like a simple choice to call out to Him and declare our trust in Him again.
Romans 10:13 says:
“For ‘whoever calls on the name of the LORD shall be saved.’”
There’s so much comfort in this promise. Because it goes beyond just calling on His name to be born again. Even in the middle of an uncertain waiting season or a spiral of fears, we can always call on His name. We can use His Word to anchor our minds when our thoughts are racing in the middle of the night.
- He’s the Good Shepherd who knows what you need and ensures you never lack.
- He’s the Bread of Life that gives you genuine strength when you are running on empty.
- He’s the Light of the World that steps into the darkest, hazy places to guide your next step.
I think more we remember who He is, the less room fear and worry have to occupy our minds. Let’s choose to turn our eyes to Jesus before assuming the worst, or trying to solve everything with our own strength, and forgetting that His help is just a prayer away.
Behind the Art: His Wonderful Name
When I sat down to draw this piece of hand-drawn modern Christian art, I wanted to visually collect some names of Jesus into a cozy, junk journal style keepsake. Using a mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic, this illustration frames the encouraging faith quote “all will be well in Jesus’ name” in a retro bubble hand-lettering.
The nostalgia-inspired doodles gather warm, comforting imagery—a fruit bowl symbolizing supply from the Good Shepherd, a sweet lamp with hand-lettered phrase “Light of the World,” a Bible labeled “The Word,” a plate of bread labeled “Bread of Life,” cozy fall leaves, and a little bow.
The imagery of food, light, and Scripture is a reminder that Jesus meets our everyday needs. When we feel drained, worried, fearful, or anxious, He offers Himself as our wisdom, our provision, our peace, and all that we need.
Pause and Look Up Today
Whatever you are carrying today, give yourself permission to pause. And call on the name of Jesus.
Tell Him what you are afraid of, remind yourself of who He is, and trust that His loving presence is with you in this moment. All will be well in His mighty hands.
A Simple Reflection for Your Day
- In what area of life can you choose to let go, and allow Jesus to be your Good Shepherd that provides today?
- What is one thought or worry you’ve been holding onto today, and what is one promise from God’s Word you can feed on instead?
FAQ: Understanding Romans 10:13
What does it mean to “call on the name of the Lord” in daily life?
Calling on the name of the Lord in our daily lives goes beyond the moment of initial salvation. It’s an ongoing daily practice. It means actively acknowledging our dependence on Jesus, and choosing to trust Him throughout the day. Whether whispering “Jesus, help me” during a tough day or praying *”*Jesus, give me wisdom” when we’re feeling anxious, calling His name invites His authority, presence, and peace into our situations.
How do I stop my feelings from taking the “driver’s seat”?
Feelings could reflect what we’re experiencing, but they aren’t reliable. When we sense an emotion like fear or panic arise, we can acknowledge it. But refuse to act on it. Instead, take a step back. We can counter the feeling by speaking a known truth out loud (like *”*God has not given me a spirit of fear…” or “The Lord is my Shepherd…”), letting Scripture take the wheel.
What does the word “saved” actually mean in Romans 10:13?
We often limit the word “saved” to mean only eternal salvation from hell. But in Scripture, the Greek word used here is sozo. It means to deliver, protect, heal, preserve, rescue, and make whole. When the apostle Paul says “whoever calls on the name of the Lord shall be saved,” he is declaring that calling on Jesus saves you in every way. It’s not only securing your eternal salvation, but also includes delivering you from fears, worries, and anxieties, as well as preserving you from destruction, and restoring God’s peace in the middle of your mess.
Safe in His Presence
You don’t have to carry the weight of figuring out your life today. Turn your eyes to the One who holds your future. Choose to call on His name, and rest in His unfailing loving. You are loved. You are well supplied. And all will be well with Him by your side.
