Isaiah 55:9 Devotional: How to Trust that God’s Plan is Always Better
I’m learning to leave room for God to change my plans.
I’ve been thinking a lot about my path ahead lately. There are goals I’m hoping for, projects I’m working towards, and plans I’m trying to figure out. And honestly, the uncertainty of it all makes me anxious.
I want to know what comes next. I want reassurance that I’m making the right choices and that all the effort I’m putting in today will actually lead somewhere good.
But I’m starting to realize that trusting God often looks like doing our best with the time, gifts, and opportunities right in front of us… while leaving room for Him to take us somewhere we never expected.
When a Door Closes
The reminder in this artwork is simple, yet comforting: “God’s plan is always better.”
This truth is anchored in Isaiah 55:9:
“For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.”
We can only see what’s in front of us, but God sees the entire story of our lives.
That means when a door closes or a plan falls apart, we don’t have to treat it as the end of the world. It’s okay to feel disappointed and take time to process the hurt. But we don’t have to force our way forward through a closed door.
Sometimes a detour means we aren’t ready for something yet. Other times, God could be protecting us from things we don’t know. We don’t have to figure out the reason. We can simply stay open to His direction, pay attention to His promptings, and trust that even a path that looks different from what we imagined is still sustained by His mighty hands.
Behind the Art: The Journal Keepsake
When I worked on this modern Christian art, I wanted to capture the personal feel of a scribbled notebook. Using a mixed-media torn paper collage junk journal aesthetic, this artwork frames the encouraging faith quote “God’s plan is always better” in a retro-inspired bubble hand-lettering.
The doodle illustrations are like stickers on this notebook paper with a thumbtack, featuring cozy elements like a bow, a burning candle, a mushroom, autumn leaves, a heart candy, and celestial shooting stars. Our plans are often just drafts. We can trust that God is writing our story, directing our steps as we focus on Him.
Holding Your Plans with Open Hands
If you are feeling uncertain or disappointed about what comes next, pause and bring those thoughts to God today. Tell Him what you’re hoping for, tell Him what you’re afraid of losing, and ask Him to guide your next steps.
You can make plans without placing your trust in them. You can work hard without carrying the belief that everything depends entirely on you.
A Simple Reflection for Your Day
- Is there a “closed door” or unexpected change of plans in your life recently that you’ve been trying to force open again?
- What would it be like to treat your current goals as a “draft” in God’s hands today, trusting that ultimately, He’s the One writing a beautiful story?
FAQ: Understanding God’s Higher Ways
How do I handle the disappointment when a seemingly good plan fails?
Disappointment is something natural that we feel, and God doesn’t expect us to suppress it. Bring your grief to Him in prayer. Remind yourself that a closed door isn’t a rejection from God. It’s often His redirection toward something better suited for you. You can believe that He’s working all things together for your good.
How can I tell the difference between a closed door and just facing normal obstacles?
When a door closes, forcing it open usually results in anxiety, stress, and a lack of inner peace. When an obstacle is simply something to overcome, you’ll often find that prayer and working unto the Lord would propel you forward. You’ll sense peace from within and see that God’s providing you with His strength to press forward, even if it’s hard.
What if God’s “better plan” feels harder than my original plan?
I think that God’s definition of “better” often centers on what He feels is needful for us to grow in His love and grace at the moment. For instance, it could focus on our personal growth, character, and peace rather than immediate comfort. A harder path often means He’s equipping you with strength, experience, and trust that you couldn’t have gained on the easier road. And take heart in this: God is with you through it all. And He’s bringing you through the tough seasons.
Guided by His Higher Ways and Thoughts
You can let go of the pressure to work out your future today. Do your best with what is in front of you, trust Him with the detours, and rest in the truth that His plan for your life is good. You are loved. You are guided. And your steps are secure in His loving hands.
