James 1:17 Devotional: Gratitude in Waiting Seasons

I am learning to stop seeing the good in my life as pure chance or luck.

When I look back over my journey, I can spot many answered prayers that are now just normal parts of my daily routine. They are blessings I once asked for, but because they’ve become familiar, it’s easy to take them for granted.

At the same time, there are still things I’m waiting on. Unanswered prayers, goals I’m working toward, and lingering questions about the future can be overwhelming. It takes intentional focus to see the good that God has already provided.

The truth I keep coming back to is simple: It’s never luck. It’s always God.

See the Blessings even in the Waiting

The Scripture behind this piece reminds us where every good thing comes from. James 1:17 points out that

“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and comes down from the Father of lights…”

I think when we start viewing our lives through this lens, our perspective changes:

  • The timely opportunities that seemed out of nowhere aren’t random.
  • The strength to wake up and try again is not our own.
  • We cross paths with specific people in our lives for a purpose.

Regardless of where we are, we can always choose to recognize God’s loving hand in our days. Grace is already present in the little, often overlooked, ordinary moments… be it a comforting conversation, or unspeakable peace in a difficult week.

Behind the Art: Providence from Above

When designing this piece of artwork, I chose elements that play on the contrast between worldly luck and divine providence. Set against a mixed-media torn paper collage junk journal aesthetic, the phrase “it’s never luck. it’s always God” stands out in a cozy bubble lettering.

The little doodles weave together contrasting symbols: Playing cards (a nod to human ideas of luck or random chance) with symbols of faith sit alongside an olive branch and a funky candle (elements that suggest God’s peace and guiding light.

A whimsical coffee cup, celestial shooting stars, and a heart celebrate the everyday gifts God sprinkles into our lives to remind us of His presence.

This artwork serves as a visual reminder that our lives aren’t governed by the toss of a coin or a roll of the dice… but held securely by a faithful and loving Father.

Reflection Questions

  • What’s one situation in your past you used to attribute to “good luck” that you can now thank God for as a blessing from Him?
  • What are some little blessings right in front of you today? Thank God for those specific gifts… even while you continue to bring your hopes and prayers to Him.

FAQ: Understanding Gratitude & James 1:17

What does James 1:17 mean by “every good and perfect gift”?

This Scripture emphasizes that God is the ultimate source of all true goodness. God’s character and generosity remain constant regardless of what we do, or whatever season of life we may be in. Every blessing reflects His everlasting love and kindness toward us.

How do I stay thankful when I’m in a tiring waiting season?

Practicing gratitude during a waiting season doesn’t mean ignoring your desires or hardship. Instead, it’s about broadening your worldview so that the waiting period isn’t the only thing you focus on and are consumed by. Acknowledging small daily mercies reminds your heart and mind that God is actively working behind the scenes, and you can trust His perfect timing in all things.

What’s the origin of the phrase “Good gift from above” in Greek?

In the original New Testament Greek, the word used for “gift” (dōrema) highlights a free, unearned present from God, the Creator of the natural sources of lights in the universe. As darkness cannot overcome His light, we can trust God’s character, in giving us good gifts.

Resting in His Faithfulness

You can breathe deeply today knowing that your life is guided by intention, not randomness. Enjoy the simple gifts in front of you… lay your hopes and dreams at His feet, and trust that the One who has been faithful in your past will remain faithful today.
