Proverbs 16:3 Devotional: What It Means to Commit Your Work to the Lord
I’m learning that faith has to change the way I work.
For a long time, I thought I had to figure out the exact right path on my own before God could bless my way forward. I spent years hopping from one thing to another, struggling to make sense of my “calling” or purpose here.
But I’m learning that God doesn’t wait for me at the finish line of a perfect plan. He wants to be right there with me in the whole ongoing journey of discovery.
That shift in perspective is rooted in the wisdom of Proverbs 16:3:
“Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”
Bringing Him into the Journey
Maybe committing my work to God simply means inviting Him into the messiness of my current situation.
It looks like bringing Him the new ideas I’m excited about, the hard decisions I don’t know how to make, the projects I’m afraid won’t work out, and even the desires I’m not sure are meant for me. And then, after laying those things down in prayer… taking the very next step I can see… the step that brings me a sense of peace. Because I can be sure that He is directing where I go.
I want to learn to work from a place of trust instead of fear. I want prayer to be an active part of my process, rather than something I reach for only after I’ve completely exhausted myself trying to figure everything out on my own.
When worrying thoughts creep in, we can practice handing them back to God. When we feel behind, we can find comfort in knowing His timing is never late. And when we can’t see what’s ahead, we can remember that we don’t have to see the whole road to take the next single step in faith.

When I sat down to create this piece of hand-drawn modern Christian art, I wanted to capture the intimacy of bringing my work, journal, and prayers to God. Using a mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic, this illustration includes the hand-lettered verse: “Commit to the LORD whatever you do, and he will establish your plans.”

I’ve been thinking of how often I get so consumed by my work, that I forget to look to the Creator of the Heavens and the stars. There is peace… when I choose to stop striving, open His Word, and lay my daily efforts into His mighty hands.

Maybe that’s what trusting God looks like for us right now:
- Do what is ours to do, and ask Him to bless the work of our hands.
- Give Him what we cannot control.
- Keep walking with Him step by step.

Does Proverbs 16:3 mean every plan I make will succeed?
Proverbs 16:3 isn’t a guarantee that God will automatically say yes to every goal on our personal wishlist. The Hebrew word for “commit” literally means to “roll” your burdens onto the Lord. When we trust Him with our desires, work, and motives, He aligns our hearts with His will. He provides us with His wisdom, favor, and supply, and causes us to succeed in the plans that He has established for our good.
How do I actually “commit my work to the Lord”?
It means praying over your daily tasks, operating with honesty and excellence, and trusting Him with the outcome. It means viewing your work… whether it’s art, studying, parenting, or a day job… as a form of worship and partnership with God rather than just a way to prove yourself. It’s about inviting Him into the journey, because He wants to provide for you, and be with you through it all.
What should I do if I feel like I’m still searching for my “calling”?
Focus on faithfulness in your current season rather than obsessing over a grand destination. God establishes your steps as you walk. When you honor Him with the small tasks right in front of you today, He naturally guides you toward the larger purpose He has for your life. And you can trust that He has good plans in store for you.
