Proverbs 16:9 Devotional: Plan Your Life But Trust God’s Direction
I love planning. Maybe a little too much.
Thinking a few steps ahead makes me feel prepared. Like if I thought through all the possibilities, I can avoid making a wrong turn. But the reality is that life rarely follows the exact itinerary I’ve written. My actual path often looks completely different from what I originally imagined.
For a long time, that reality frustrated me. I wanted to know exactly where I was heading before I felt comfortable taking the next step.
But I’ve been finding so much comfort in the reassurance of Scripture memory verse Proverbs 16:9:
“A man’s heart plans his way, But the LORD directs his steps.”
From Overthinking to Trusting Him
I love that this verse doesn’t say planning is wrong or foolish. It just reminds me that God is the far better Guide. He’s the One who sees the road best suited for me long before I ever reach it.
When I travel, I pack what I think I need. I think I often do the same thing in life… constantly trying to pack and prepare myself for tomorrow. Yet, I’ve been realizing that the most important thing I can carry in any season isn’t absolute confidence in my own plans. Rather, it’s God’s Word. As Psalm 119:105 reminds me:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
A lamp only reveals the ground right in front of me. I’m learning to loosen my grip on my expectations. I can prepare without becoming entirely consumed by the future. And I can continue dreaming while staying open to and focused on God’s direction. Wherever the journey takes me, Jesus always goes before me.

When creating this piece of hand-drawn modern Christian art, I knew I wanted to highlight the idea of an adventure and journey with the Lord. To capture the warmth of a late summer camping road trip adventure, I used a mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic with retro-inspired warm colors.
The vintage-inspired explorer ephemera features items I could pack for a journey – an enamel mug, a hurricane kerosene lamp, a Bible, and a vintage suitcase covered in travel stickers (including encouraging faith quote reminders like “Jesus saves”). And doodles of things I could see on the road scattered throughout, like little treasures gathered along the way! A road sign, cornflower floral, simple leaf botanicals, mushrooms, acorns, and a little bow. Hand-lettering the uplifting Scripture verse Proverbs 16:9 in a handwritten style reminds me that I don’t need to know every twist and turn on the trail. I can simply choose to stay close to the One who’s leading me.

Proverbs 16:9 highlights the coexistence of human responsibility and divine sovereignty. God gave us minds to think, reason, and make wise plans for our future. But God has the final say. Let Him direct our steps because He has good plans in store for us. He can guide and adjust our steps to align with His purposes for our lives.
Since God is ultimately in control, does it mean I shouldn’t plan at all?
Not at all. The Bible praises wisdom, diligence, and preparation (examples can be found in the book of Proverbs itself). Planning becomes problematic only when our plans become an idol, meaning we become angry, anxious, or bitter when God changes our direction. May we learn to do our preparations, but trust that His plans are higher, and His ways are better.
How do I actually let God direct my steps day-to-day?
I think letting God direct our steps starts with daily acknowledgement of His presence. It means starting our days by telling Him, “Lord, these are my plans for today. Guide my steps, and give me good success in all that I may do.” It also means staying grounded in prayer and Scripture so that your heart is sensitive to His promptings.
