Psalm 119:105 Devotional: What to Do When You Feel Like You’re Falling Behind
I’ve been thinking about how easily I slip into worry and comparison. I find myself wondering if I’m falling behind, if I should be doing more… or if everyone else somehow knows where they’re going while I’m still standing here with no clue what to do next.
I overthink my decisions, replay conversations in my mind… and try to predict what’s coming next. Somewhere in all of that noise, I forget to pause.
I forget to let His Word speak life into my situation.
That leads me to this: that the answer is always Jesus.
It stems from the grounding truth of Psalm 119:105:
“Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.”
Just Enough Light for the Step Right in Front of You
I love the picture of a lamp at my feet. It doesn’t illuminate the entire path ahead. Rather, it offers just enough light for the step right in front of me. In the middle of feeling overwhelmed by the big picture, maybe that is all I truly need.
Instead of letting worries, fears, and anxieties take root in my heart, I’m learning to make a change. By opening His Word before another internet tab… praying the moment I start to feel overwhelmed… and making space to listen before filling every silent moment with distractions.
There are still things I don’t know, decisions I’m trying to make, and days when the future looks hazy. But I’m learning to trust that the Lord holds all the answers. We can bring our questions to Him, ask for His wisdom, and trust that He’s capable of leading us forward.
Behind the Art: The Cozy Campsite
When I created this piece of hand-drawn modern Christian art, I wanted to capture the cozy atmosphere of the woods. Using a mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic, this illustration frames the faith quote: “the answer is Jesus” in cute, playful bubble hand-lettering.
The vintage-inspired camping adventure elements feature a little sheep sitting on a mushroom while reading a Bible, surrounded by scout patches, an acorn, apple slices, celestial stars, and a bow. The image of the sheep diving into Scripture in the woods is a reminder of where my focus belongs. When the world tells me to hurry up and compete, God invites me on an adventure with Him. He wants me to trust that He’s in control of the way ahead. And that I can slow down, sit down, open His Word, and receive the light I need each day.
Pause Before You Rush Ahead
If you’re in a season like that right now… searching for the perfect plan, the right opportunity, or reassurance that everything will work out… let this be your permission to pause before you rush to find another answer.
Open God’s Word. Tell Him what’s on your heart, and give Him room to speak. Jesus is always the answer for everything you need.
A Simple Reflection for Your Day
- What is one habit (like reaching for your phone or searching for advice) you can swap for a quick moment of prayer when anxiety hits today?
- Look at the illustration of the sheep reading the Bible… how can taking just five quiet minutes with Scripture today help reframe your worries?
FAQ: Finding Direction Through Scripture
What does it mean that God’s Word is a “lamp to my feet”?
God calls us seek His Word everyday, because it’s light for our situations. His light shows us the way ahead, and guides us step by step. The Message translation says: “By your words I can see where I’m going; they throw a beam of light on my dark path.” His Word provides the direction we truly need.
How do I stop comparing my timeline to everyone else’s?
Comparison happens when we focus on other people’s highlights instead of our own God-given path. Remind yourself that God has a specific purpose for your life, and that He is bringing it into fulfillment in His perfect timing. There’s no need to rush things. Your journey is a walk of faith and rest with Him.
What practical steps can I take when I’m overwhelmed by big decisions?
Start by stepping away from external noise and inputs. Give yourself space to sit with stillness. Write down your worries, fears, anxieties, and concerns… bring them to God in prayer, read a comforting passage of Scripture, and let God lead you to focus on what’s needful for today.
Guided Step by Step
You don’t have to carry the pressure of knowing tomorrow’s answers today. You can simply walk in the quiet light He gives for this moment. You are loved. You are guided. And you are right on time.
