John 8:12 Devotional Reflection: How to Find Wisdom When You Feel Confused
I’ve been collecting advice… when what I really needed… was wisdom.
For a long time, I thought the answer to getting ahead in life was out there somewhere. And that if I searched harder, I would find it. I looked for it in another book, a new course, a podcast, or an expert telling me the “right” way to live. Many of those things were helpful. But I realized that I became more confused the more I listened to them.
Because the world’s voices often contradict each other. And it wasn’t easy to tell who were simply advancing their own interests and agendas. Before long, I became exhausted from trying to figure out who was right and which path I was supposed to take.
In that space of feeling overwhelmed, the verse that has been encouraging my heart lately is John 8:12:
Then Jesus spoke to them again, saying, “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.”
The Shift From Chasing to Trusting
What I love most about this promise is that Jesus doesn’t tell me I need to figure everything out on my own. He doesn’t ask me to become my own source of wisdom… and He doesn’t demand that I have foresight of what lies ahead. He simply invites me to follow Him.
Just like a lighthouse helps sailors navigate rough waters and know where to go, that is what Jesus becomes for me in a world full of darkness.
Following Him doesn’t mean I get an instant explanation for every problem or a detailed map of my entire life. But He is a steady, unwavering light when I can’t see very far ahead. It’s a comforting reminder that I don’t need to know the entire journey. I just need to trust the One who does.
No one knows me better than the One who created me. No one cares more deeply about my future than the One who gave His life for me. So these days, I’m spending less time chasing endless answers. I’m choosing to spend more time dwelling in His presence… simply staying close to Him. Less striving. More trusting. Less fear about the future. More confidence in the One who’s already there.

When I sat down to draw this hand-drawn modern Christian art, I wanted to create something that felt like a calm, restful harbor in a stormy sea. Using a mixed-media torn paper collage junk journal aesthetic, this piece features the encouraging faith quote: “in a world full of darkness let God be your light.”
The vintage-inspired, retro nautical theme, with illustrated lighthouse, anchor, and beach coastal elements, is a visual reminder of what it looks like to be anchored in truth. When the world feels noisy, dark, and overwhelming, the Lord is the light that pierces through the chaos and confusion. Hand-lettering these words in a playful doodle style was my way of letting go of the pressure to find my guide and my way forward. I don’t have to navigate the deep waters by my own strength. I already have the light of God’s love and presence with me.
You Don’t Have to See the Whole Path

You don’t need to plan your way to your destination before taking the next step. The One who lights the way is already walking with you through the dark… and that is more than enough for today.

What does it mean that Jesus is the “light of the world”?
Darkness often represents confusion, sin, and being lost… while light represents truth, holiness, and direction. When Jesus calls Himself the light of the world, He’s declaring that He is the ultimate source of spiritual truth. Just as physical light exposes obstacles, shows a pathway forward, Jesus shows us reality and guides our steps safely.
How do I “stay close to Him” when I’m overwhelmed?
Staying close to God doesn’t require hours of quiet time. It starts with small shifts: turning a worry that’s been bothering you into a short prayer, reading a single verse in the morning and letting it settle in your mind… or simply pausing to acknowledge His love, wisdom, and presence in the middle of a stressful moment. It is about choosing to look to Him, in all things, instead of rushing to self-effort.
Why does listening to too many voices cause confusion?
Human advice is always limited by human perspective, and could change based on individual agendas. When we rely solely on books, podcasts, and opinions to “win” in life, solve our problems, or find peace, we are trying to build security on sinking sand. True wisdom is anchored in God’s character and His love for us. When we align our thoughts with His Word first, we allow God to take control of our lives. And that is when we’re set free from the people and things of the world who may not have our best interest at heart.

You can step out of the exhausting search for answers today. You don’t have to figure out the future, because your path is already lit by a faithful Savior. You are loved. You are seen. And you are safe in His care.
