Luke 1:37 Devotional: Trusting God When You Can’t See the Full Picture

I don’t know exactly where this is going.

I wish I had a clearer plan by now… a map and a timeline for where my life is headed. Instead, I find myself in a season with far more questions than answers. There are dreams on my heart, things I would love to pursue, and creative ideas that I can’t stop thinking about. And yet, when I look ahead, the path feels hazy.

I don’t always know what to focus on. I don’t know exactly how things will unfold. And that uncertainty feels uncomfortable.

But lately, I’ve been sitting with the familiar words of Luke 1:37:

“For with God nothing will be impossible.”

I’ve heard this verse so many times before, but I’m starting to look at it in a different way.

God is Not Limited by Your Perspective

Luke 1:37 isn’t a promise that life will suddenly become easy. It’s not a guarantee that my future will happen exactly the way I want it to.

Instead, it is a reminder that God isn’t limited by what I can currently see. When I look at my own situation, I see the obstacles. I tend to focus on what I lack, what I don’t know, and how far away my dreams seem. But God sees possibilities and a future I can’t yet imagine.

Maybe that’s why I don’t need to know everything right now. Maybe I only need enough light for the very next step, enough grace for today… and enough wisdom for what is right in front of me. Maybe faith is… about having confidence in the One who is leading me all along.

Behind the Art: The Unhurried Sailor

When I sat down to draw this piece of modern Christian art, I wanted to capture the feeling of being out on the water without a map, but perfectly safe because of who’s in control. I used a torn paper collage junk journal aesthetic to reflect how our hopes and plans can sometimes feel like scraps, torn and discarded… Yet God picks them up, and gives us beauty for ashes.

The artwork features a calm coastal, sailorcore nautical theme… with a little sheep in a sailboat, an anchor, and a compass. In the middle of an uncertain season, I know I can always trust God’s direction. Hand-lettering the phrase “With God nothing will be impossible” in a retro-inspired bubble style was a simple way to remind myself to rest in His love and presence. I can trust my Shepherd steering my boat.

Trusting Him With Your Next Steps

If you’ve been feeling anxious or worried lately, looking at your hopes and dreams and wondering what comes next… May this be your reminder: God is always leading you ahead. He is directing your steps, providing you with His wisdom… And He has good plans in store for you. Choose to walk with Him. Because with Him, nothing is impossible.

A Simple Reflection for Your Day

  • What’s one dream or plan you’ve been holding onto so tightly that it’s causing you anxiety? Tell the Lord all that’s on your heart. Let His presence reassure you and bring you peace.
  • If you’re looking for direction, bring this request to the Lord. Ask Him for wisdom and to show you the way forward. May your heart find rest in knowing that God freely gives when we choose ask Him.

FAQ: What Does Luke 1:37 Really Mean?

What is the context of Luke 1:37?

This verse was spoken by the angel Gabriel to Mary when he announced that she would give birth to Jesus, the Messiah, despite it being humanly impossible. It’s a reminder that God isn’t limited by human logic and the forces of nature.

How do I trust God when things in my life feels uncertain?

I think trusting God in an uncertain season requires shifting your focus from a desired destination to the daily walk. Instead of demanding a five-year plan from God, ask Him for the wisdom, strength, and perseverance needed for just this season. Peace comes when we choose to trust that He knows what’s best for us. And that He works all things together for our good.

Why does God withhold the full plan from us sometimes?

If we knew the entire path, we might rely on our own strength and strategy to get there. Or we might become overwhelmed by what lies ahead. God gives us supply for each day, and guides our next steps. When we choose to stay close to Him, we build intimacy, trust, and reliance on Him. And in turn, we are allowing God’s purpose for us to be fulfilled in our lives.

You Are Being Led

You don’t have to map out your whole future today. You can simply rest, knowing that the One who holds the stars is the same One directing your steps. You are loved. You are seen. And with Him, your story is full of possibilities.
