Psalm 138:8 Devotional: How to Trust God’s Plan When You Don’t Feel Capable Enough
I’m learning that not knowing… doesn’t mean I’m lost.
There are so many things about my future that I don’t know. I have goals I’m working toward, hopes I’m holding onto… and projects I pray will work out. But sometimes, when I look at everything ahead of me, doubt creeps in: Am I actually capable of getting there?
I feel inexperienced. Unqualified. On those days, I wish I could see just a little further down the road… if only to know whether all this effort will eventually lead somewhere.
Yet, I’m starting to see that this uncertain season is teaching me something more valuable than certainty: learning to trust.
God Completes What He Starts
I can still show up every day, put care into the things on my heart… and give my best to the work in front of me. But I don’t have to rely on my own strength to guarantee the results. My life has never been held together by how well I perform… because God’s the One who remains in control. And He has good plans in store for me.
That truth brings me straight back to the comforting words of Psalm 138:8:
“The LORD will fulfill his purpose for me; your steadfast love, O LORD, endures forever. Do not forsake the work of your hands.”
I love the little guarantee inside this scripture: God isn’t finished with what He has started in me. Apostle Paul echoes this promise in Philippians 1:6, “He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion.”
God’s faithfulness isn’t dependent on how confident you feel in your own abilities today. You can feel uncertain and still move forward. You can feel afraid and still trust Him. You can work faithfully without carrying the false belief that everything depends on you.

(It may be idealistic since it’s just all in my imagination. I’ve never been on a camping adventure in the wild.) You can rest in God’s steadfast love today. You can place what you have in His capable hands… knowing that the God who called you is the very same God who will fulfill His purpose for your life. Just keep walking with Him.

What does it mean that the Lord will fulfill His purpose for me?
This verse means that God’s plans for your life are backed by His love and faithfulness towards you, not your perfection. While we are called to be obedient and diligent in the things He has graciously entrusted to us, the ultimate responsibility for bringing about God’s good purpose rests on His power and enduring love.
How do I know if I’m walking in God’s purpose when I can’t see it?
I think walking in God’s purpose is usually much simpler than we make it out to be. It isn’t about having a grand 10-year career blueprint. Rather, it’s about daily obedience and letting Him lead you on your journey forward. Keep seeking God in prayer, showing the people around you the love and care you first received from Him, and doing your current tasks with integrity. And you’d be actively walking in His purpose. As for which way to go, He’ll reveal to you along the way.
What is the difference between my purpose and my job/calling?
Your primary purpose as a Christian never changes: to know God, love Him, and reflect His love and character to the world. Your calling or job is simply the temporal vehicle or setting where you live out that purpose. Roles, careers, and seasons may change, but your core purpose in Christ remains secure.

You can step out of the pressure to prove yourself today. The One who created you has already written your story, and He’s faithfully guiding every step of the way. You are loved. You are equipped. And your purpose is secure in His hands.
