Why Peace Isn’t Found in a Perfect Life (Isaiah 26:3 Reflection)

I used to spend a lot of energy chasing the “perfect” kind of day.
I had this thought that peace required certain conditions. I thought I needed a quiet environment… a smooth morning… plans that worked out exactly the way I expected.
I told myself that peace would finally come when things settled down… when people were easier to deal with… or when life felt just a little more predictable.
But life rarely looks like that. And even after all the striving, my life is nowhere close to that.
There are always interruptions… unexpected changes… And moments where everything feels uncertain all at once. I noticed that if my peace depended on everything going right, then it would always feel so out of reach.
And I realized a truth that changed everything: Peace isn’t found in a perfect life, but in a perfect God.
Where We Place Our Attention
We often try to find peace by controlling our surroundings. We think if we can just manage the noise or fix the problems, we’ll finally feel calm. Even if we manage to obtain this so-called peace, it never lasts for long.
God calls our attention to biblical peace… which doesn’t come from managing our environment. It comes from where we place our attention.
In Isaiah 26:3, we find a comforting promise:
“You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You.”
This “perfect peace” isn’t promised for when life is perfect or when everything is resolved. It’s promised for when our minds are fixed on Him.
When I focus on what’s going wrong, my thoughts naturally begin to spiral. When I try to carry every burden on my own, I feel overwhelmed. But when I pause and bring my thoughts back to God… to who He is, His faithfulness, and His constant presence… things start to change from the inside out. I start to sense calmness from within. The noise of the world softens because I realize I’m no longer facing it all alone.
Behind the Art: Finding Calm in the Layers
In this artwork, I wanted to capture the feeling of returning to a quiet center. I used a mixed-media torn-paper collage aesthetic with analog-style brushstrokes and tape because faith often feels like layering truth over the messy parts of our day.
I chose specific doodle elements to represent this journey toward peace:
- Candle: It symbolizes the steady light of God’s presence. It’s a reminder that even when we don’t have all the answers, we have enough light from His Word for the next step.
- Apples and Floral Botanicals: These are small, ordinary reminders of God’s provision. They remind me to look for His goodness in the middle of a normal, imperfect day.
- Notebook Torn Paper and Tape: These symbolize the process of “journaling” our way through life. It’s okay if things look a little torn or unfinished… God meets us right in the middle of the process.
Hand-lettering the quote was a way for me to sit with His presence. It was a reminder to myself that I don’t have to wait for things around me to be quiet to be at peace.
You Don’t Have to Wait
God’s peace doesn’t remove every challenge. It doesn’t always take away the difficult decisions or the busy seasons. But it meets us right in the middle of them. It guards our hearts and reminds us that we’re always held in His love and grace.
If you’ve been waiting for everything to feel calm before you allow yourself to feel at peace, let this be your reminder: You don’t have to wait.
You can come to Him exactly as you are… in the middle of the noise and the endless questions.
A Simple Reflection for Your Day
- Instead of trying to handle everything, what’s one thing you can leave in God’s hands for today?
- Name one thing you know to be true about God’s character. How does that speak to your situation now?
Understanding Isaiah 26:3

What does “perfect peace” mean in the Bible?
The phrase “perfect peace” comes from the Hebrew words shalom shalom. Repeating the word “shalom” (peace) twice emphasizes a peace that is complete, whole, and restorative. It’s a peace that goes beyond just a calm feeling. It is a soul-deep security that comes from focusing on God and His faithfulness, in spite of all that you’re going through.
How do I “stay my mind” on God when I’m busy?
Staying your mind on God doesn’t require hours of silence. It can be as simple as a taking a short pause for a second to say, “Lord, I trust You with this moment and whatever’s weighing down on my heart right now.” It’s about redirecting your attention back to Him every now and then, throughout the day.
Why do I still feel anxious if I trust God?
Anxiety is a human response to uncertainty. But peace is a gift God provides in the midst of it. Trusting God doesn’t mean you will never feel a spark of worry. It means you have a safe place to bring that worry so it doesn’t have to stay buried in your heart.
You Are Held
You don’t have to handle every worry today. You can simply rest in His presence and trust that He’s leading you forward. You are loved. You are seen. And you are never alone.
