Psalm 107:1 Devotional: What to Do When You Feel Drained by Worries and Cares

Sometimes I need to stop looking at what’s happening around me and remember what I know to be true.

I don’t want my days to decide what I believe. Life rarely goes exactly the way we want it to, and the thing that throws us off doesn’t even have to be a massive crisis. Sometimes it’s just a difficult day. It’s a little disappointment… a plan that fell through, or an annoying thought that keeps replaying in your mind until you feel so consumed by it.

Before we know it, we start running through every worst-case scenario. We worry about what we can’t control… and we’re lugging around the heavy weight of the “what-ifs”.

That is why I keep coming back to a truth so simple it almost feels crazy: God is good all the time.

When Faith Seems Too Simple

Saying “God is good” can feel almost too simplistic for the things we go through in life. But I think that’s why we need it. An anchor for our weary souls.

This core truth is woven throughout Scripture, especially in Psalm 107:1:

“Oh, give thanks to the LORD, for He is good! For His mercy endures forever.”

God’s goodness doesn’t change depending on how your day is going, or what you’re facing. He remains faithful even when we take our eyes off Him, and He’s still in control when everything around us feels chaotic.

As Romans 8:28 reminds us, He’s actively working all things together for our good… even the frustrating delays, and the messy detours. Choosing to trust Him when things don’t seem good might look completely irrational to the world. But since when was God’s grace meant to be explained by human logic?

You don’t need to understand everything you’re going through before you choose to trust the Father guiding you. The next time your mind starts spiraling into worries, pause. Take a deep breath, step away from the noise, and ask yourself: What does God’s Word say about this? Then let His truth have the final word… not your feelings, not your fears, or the headlines.

Behind the Art: The Healer of Broken Hearts

When I was ideating on this piece of hand-drawn modern Christian art, I wanted to illustrate the little comfort God offers us in our everyday lives. Using a mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic, this artwork frames the encouraging faith quote “God is good all the time” in cute, playful bubble letters.

The vintage-inspired illustrations feature cozy, healing symbols, a heart with a plaster, a little dove carrying penpal snail mail, a roadside direction sign, and a warm, comforting cup of hot coffee. The coffee cup and postal dove remind me of slow, peaceful mornings where we sit down with God’s Word, trade our anxieties for His peace, and let Him heal the wounds in our hearts.

Let His Truth Have the Final Word Today

If you’ve been feeling overwhelmed by a tough week or a series of small disappointments, let this be your comforting reminder: God is still good, and He’s holding all things together.

Put down your worries, cast them into His loving hands, pick up His Word, and rest in the unwavering love of the One who never leaves your side.

A Simple Reflection for Your Day

  • What’s one small disappointment or frustration recently that has been taking up too much room in your thoughts?
  • How does it comfort you to know that God cares about healing even the minor “scratches” and bad days in your life?

FAQ: Understanding God’s Goodness in Hard Times

What does “God is good all the time” really mean when life hurts?

It means that goodness is God’s core essence. Even when we experience pain, loss, or hardship because we live in a fallen world, God’s character remains caring, loving, and redemptive. His goodness means He will never abandon us in our pain and will always work all things together for our good.

How can I stop reacting emotionally to every bad situation?

I think the key is creating a deliberate pause between a bad situation and your reaction. Instead of immediately overthinking or venting, take a moment to pray: “Lord, I don’t like how this feels, I don’t like what’s happening… but I know You are good. I trust that You’re for me, and You’re in control.” Grounding your emotions in Scripture before you respond trains your heart to rely on God’s love rather than your immediate feelings.

How do I hold onto faith when my situation doesn’t make sense?

For me, I’d shit my focus from understanding why something is happening to remembering God’s track record. When I can’t see what God is doing, I’d look back at the cross and His past faithfulness in my life. He has never failed me… and He isn’t going to start now. A song that has always encouraged me is Elevation Worship’s See a Victory.

May our faith in God arise as we choose to turn away from our situation towards Christ.

Anchored in God’s Love

You can breathe easy today. Your bad day doesn’t change God’s good heart toward you. Hand Him your cares and worries, sip your coffee, and trust that He’s taking care of your tomorrow. You are loved. You are safe. And His mercy endures forever.
