What to Do When You Feel Overwhelmed by Your Thoughts
I’ve spent way too much time trying to solve everything myself.
I know what happens I get scared: I overthink. I run through every possible outcome in my mind, analyze every detail, and try to figure out what I should do next. I convince myself that if I just think about a problem long enough, I’ll eventually find the answer. But honestly, all that mental effort leaves me doing is feeling more overwhelmed.
The reminder in here is simple: “Pray and never lose hope.”
I need this far more often than I’d like to admit.
Prayer Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect to Be Real
I think I hold myself back from praying because I think prayer has to look like a long, carefully worded, fluent speech. But prayer can be much simpler, yet powerful:
- “God, I need Your help.”
- “I don’t know what to do.”
- “Lord, give me Your wisdom.”
- “Lord, make a way for me.”
- “Lord, I cast my cares and worries about… to You.”
That’s more than enough to begin.
Romans 12:12 says:
“Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer.”
These three instructions belong together. When life feels uncertain, hope gives us something steady to hold onto. When circumstances are difficult, patience reminds us that we can trust God’s perfect timing. And prayer reminds us that we never have to face the battle alone.
There is so much comfort in knowing we can bring God our fears, worries, and anxieties without pretending to have it all together. We can name our fears, ask for direction when we feel completely lost, and trust Him with the outcome… even when we have no idea what that outcome will be.
We can remain hopeful because we know the One we’re trusting while we wait.
Behind the Art: Treasures of Anchor and Hope
When I was working on this piece of hand-drawn modern Christian art, I wanted to create something joyful and full of light to break through the heaviness of worry. Using a mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic, this illustration frames the message: “pray and never lose hope” in a retro-inspired lettering.
The vintage-inspired illustrations gather sweet, eclectic treasures: an anchor, a penpal snail mail envelope, a key with a bow, celestial shooting star, an open Bible, a cozy candle, washi tapes, and a three-leaf clover. May we be anchored in God’s Word, and always ready tell God whatever’s on our heart. Prayer’s the key that unlocks God’s peace in the middle of our everyday chaos.
Choose Prayer Over Overthinking Today
If you’ve been feeling mentally overwhelmed by something today, try this before you spend another hour trying to figure it out: Pause.
Tell God what’s on your mind. Ask Him for the specific wisdom you need just for today. Choose prayer over another mental spiral. And choose hope over assuming the worst. You don’t have to carry the weight of solving this on your own.
A Simple Reflection for Your Day
- What’s one worry you’ve been “thinking through” all week that you can turn into a one-sentence prayer now?
- Look at the imagery of the key and the penpal envelope in the artwork… how does it reframe your prayer life to picture God as eagerly waiting for your honest letter rather than a formal speech?
FAQ: What to Do When Overthinking Takes Over
How do I stop my mind from spiraling when I’m anxious?
I think the way to break a mental spiral is to move the thoughts out of your head. Speak a simple prayer out loud, write down your worries in a journal, or read an encouraging Scripture verse. Let His peace start to reign in your heart.
What does “be constant in prayer” mean if I have a busy daily life?
Being constant in prayer doesn’t mean spending hours of dedicated time in prayer daily. It could look like having a continuous, open conversation with God throughout your normal routine… whispering a prayer while doing dishes, asking for wisdom before replying to an email, or thanking Him during your commute.
Why does God ask us to pray if He already knows what we need?
God invites us to pray because prayer changes things, prayer changes us. It builds intimacy in our relationship with Him, shifts our trust away from our own strength, and opens our hearts to receive the peace, comfort, and wisdom He’s already waiting to give us.
You’re Never Facing It Alone
You can step out of the endless cycle of trying to solve tomorrow today. Take a deep breath, hand your cares over to your loving Father, and rest in His constant care. You are loved. You are heard. And you are safe in His mighty hands.
