Proverbs 3:5–6 Devotional: How to Stop Overthinking Your Future and Work From a Place of Rest
These days, I’m realizing that my ambition can become an idol too.
There have been seasons when my mind feels like it’s constantly somewhere else. I’m physically present, but mentally I’m running through checklists: What should I be doing next? What haven’t I finished yet? What am I falling behind on? How could I be doing this better?
Even when I’m trying to rest, a part of me is still busy planning what needs to happen tomorrow.
I think working hard isn’t a bad thing. I want to be diligent and faithful with the creative work God has placed in my hands. But I’ve been asking myself this lately: Am I working in partnership with God, or am I working as though everything depends entirely on me?
Restful Work and Open Hands
We can make plans and put in effort, but the reality is we can’t see the whole road ahead. And maybe that uncertainty is the place where trust begins.
This is where the familiar words of Proverbs 3:5–6 bring relief:
“Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
I love that this passage doesn’t tell us to sit idle or do nothing. Instead, it reminds us that we don’t have to understand every detail before we take the next step on this journey.
So I’m learning to trust God as a dependable partner. To pray before I get overwhelmed, to pause before rushing onto the next project, and to invite Him into the everyday creation process… not just asking Him to bless the final outcome.
When worries creep back in, we can remember that God is the One holding our future together. You can give your absolute best to today’s work without relying on your performance for your self-worth. You can make plans while remaining open to detours, leaving tomorrow safely in His hands.

If you’ve been carrying the pressure of having everything perfectly mapped out, give yourself permission to pause today. You don’t need to hold tomorrow together.
Do what’s right in front of you today with care and His joy, hand over the unknown results to Him, and just take the next step in faith. The Lord is already with you, and He’s faithfully guiding your steps.

What does “lean not on your own understanding” mean?
It means recognizing the limits of human knowledge and foresight. Our logic, research, and planning are helpful tools, but they are limited by what we can see in the moment. Not leaning on our own understanding means trusting the Lord’s wisdom, allowing God’s Word and guidance to overwrite what we think or feel we should do.
How do I know if my ambition has become an idol?
I think this happens when your peace is entirely tied to your productivity or success. It could look like feeling extreme anger when plans are changed, feeling guilty when you want to rest, or stopping quiet time with the Lord because you think you don’t have enough time.
How can I work “from a place of rest”?
Working from rest means shifting your mindset from working for approval to working from approval. You begin your workday knowing you’re already loved and secure in Christ. This frees you to work with excellence without the pressure of proving your worth through your output.
Peace for the Journey Ahead
You don’t have to carry the burden of figuring out your life’s direction today. Put your hands to today’s work, leave tomorrow’s outcome with your Heavenly Father, and rest in His unwavering care. You are loved. You are guided. And you are safe in His embrace.
