Creating Modern Christian Art: How I Choose between Analog or Digital

There are days when I reach for my sketchbook.
Other days, it’s my iPad.
And honestly, it’s not about which is better.
It’s about what my heart and hands need in that moment.

Why I switch between paper and digital
Some creative moments call for slowness and simplicity.
- A marker in hand, a page in front of me.
- A single verse or doodle to meditate on.
- No layers, no undo button… just presence.
Other moments call for play and flexibility.
- Exploring color, texture, and composition digitally.
- Layering ideas without fear of mistakes.
- Being able to experiment, erase, and iterate quickly.
It’s not about one being better than the other.
It’s about letting faith lead the medium… not the medium leading me.
How I decide
Usually, I ask myself one simple question:
What feels most inviting for reflection right now?
- Overwhelmed or tired? Paper feels grounding.
- Inspired or curious about color/texture? iPad feels freeing.
- Combining both? I sketch my ideas on paper first, then refine digitally.
By following what feels natural, I create without pressure, and the focus stays on Scripture, reflection, and presence, not on the tools themselves.

This approach has helped me stay consistent in my creative faith practice:
- I don’t force a medium to fit a schedule.
- I don’t compare my paper pages to digital creations.
- I simply show up and let God’s Word speak… whether that’s on paper or on a screen.
It’s a small thing, but it’s freed me from thinking creativity needs to be one way, or that I need to always “perform” at a certain level.
A little invitation
If you’re curious about exploring your own faith through creative practices… digital, analog, or both — I share a free weekly faith-based creative reflection:
- One Scripture verse
- One short reflection
- One creative journaling prompt
It’s designed to help you engage with God’s Word in ways that feel natural and accessible, whether that’s sketching, hand-lettering, coloring, or creating digitally.
You’re welcome to join if it feels like something that would support your faith and creative journey.
