Letting Go of the Need to Figure It All Out (Proverbs 3:5–6 Reflection)

I’ve always been someone who likes to plan.
I like to think things through… and have a clear sense of direction before I take the next step. For a long time, it felt like the responsible way to live. I thought that having a plan meant I knew what I was doing.
But life hasn’t really followed the plans I’ve made.
When things don’t go the way I expected, I notice how quickly worry creeps in. It’s like I immediately feel the need to “figure it all out” again to regain some sense of control. But recently, I’ve been coming back to the familiar words of Proverbs 3:5–6:
“Trust in the LORD with all your heart, and lean not on your own understanding; in all your ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct your paths.”
It’s such a simple verse, but it confronts the way I’ve been holding onto things.
I’m learning that I don’t have to prove anything by having it all figured out. Trusting God doesn’t always look like having a perfect plan… Sometimes it just looks like being honest about the uncertainty and choosing to trust Him anyway.
Letting Go of the Need to Understand
Sometimes we think we need to know the “why” or the “how” before we can feel secure. But the Bible invites us to lean on His understanding instead of our own.
God sees what we can’t. He sees the road ahead… the detours… and the destination. We don’t have to rush ahead just to feel safe. We can take a step back and slowly learn to let go. When we acknowledge Him in the middle of our questions, we allow Him to be the one who directs our steps.
You don’t have to carry the weight of your future on your own. You’re allowed to not have all the answers right now.
Behind the Art: Finding Peace in His Perfect Plans
For this piece, I wanted to capture a sense of joy and release. I used a mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic because our lives could be a collection of different scraps… all held together by God’s hand.
I chose these specific doodle elements to help process the heart of Proverbs 3:5–6:
- The Embroidery and Button: These symbolize the “handmade” care God puts into our lives. Embroidery takes time and patience… it reminds me that God is detail-oriented and isn’t in a rush, even when I am.
- Mushrooms, Flowers, and Strawberry Fruit: These remind me to stay grounded, and present… To look at the growth happening right at my feet… the little joys blossoming in my life… And not worry about the mountain miles away.
- Celestial Shooting Stars: These add a bit of wonder to the piece. They represent the fact that God’s ways are higher and more creative than our own. His (sometimes surprising) plans often bring us joy and delight.
- The Open Bible: God’s Word is my anchor. When things feel uncertain… and my plans fall through, I go back to the truth that never fails and doesn’t change.
- “Don’t stress, God knows what’s best” in Groovy Retro Style Letters: Hand-lettering this phrase was a way to process God’s Word in my heart… reminding me that it’s okay to relax. Because God’s got this.
You’re Already Being Guided
If you’ve been feeling the weight of needing to figure your life out today, may this be your reminder: You can bring everything on your heart and mind to Him exactly as it is. You don’t have to wait until you have a plan to talk to Him. You can bring the desires, the questions, and the mess.
Trust that He is already guiding your steps, every single moment of your life. He’s leading you… even if you don’t see it yet.
A Simple Reflection for Your Day
- What is one area of your life where you’ve been trying to regain control lately? What would it feel like to simply tell God, “I don’t have a plan for this, but I trust Yours”?
- Can you think of one time in the past when God’s unexpected path turned out better than your original plan?
FAQ: Trusting God’s Direction
What does it mean to “lean not on your own understanding”?
It means recognizing that our knowledge and perspective of things is limited. We only see a small piece of the story… while God sees the big picture. Leaning on Him means we choose to stop relying solely on our logic and reasoning… And instead, rely on His character and His Word.
How do I “acknowledge Him in all my ways”?
I think acknowledging Him isn’t just a one-time event. It’s a lifestyle of invitation. It’s pausing before making every decision… stepping back from hustle to pray during a busy day… and choosing to remember His presence and love in all situations.
What if I don’t feel like God is directing my path?
God leads us in many ways… Sometimes it’s the presence or absence of peace… as well as guidance for the next step ahead of us. Other times, His leading can be seen in the open or closed doors, promptings to do something (or not)… Choosing to trust Him in the process, even when there aren’t clear signals… is part of the path itself.
Rest in His Wisdom
You don’t have to carry the burden of the “next ten steps” today. You only need to take the one right in front of you with Him. You’re loved. You’re seen. And you’re always being led by Him.
