Why Your Story Isn’t Wasted: A Reflection on Romans 8:28

I’ve had seasons I wish I could undo. There are so many moments I wish had gone differently… decisions I still question and seasons that felt entirely unnecessary and uncomfortable.
It’s so easy to look back and feel like I’ve messed up parts of my story. I struggle with the feeling that maybe I’ve delayed something good, or made my life harder than it ever needed to be.
But the more I sit with the truth of Romans 8:28, the more my perspective begins to shift.
“And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God…”
This Bible verse doesn’t just apply to the moments that made sense or the parts of my life I’m proud of. It says all things. The good decisions, the uncertain ones, and even the ones I wish I never made. None of what you’ve been through is wasted. God sees the full picture in a way we never could… And He isn’t limited by our past.
Moving Beyond Regret
I’m learning that I don’t have to carry regret like a badge of honor. I don’t have to keep rewriting the past in my mind or fearing that I’ve ruined things beyond repair.
My story isn’t held together by my perfection… it’s held together by His abundant love and grace. Even in the places where I felt lost, He was still present. Even in the choices I questioned, He was… and still is… able to redirect, restore, and redeem. He’s well able to weave purpose out of pain.
Behind the Art: The Beauty of the Weaving
For this piece, I wanted to use elements that felt stitched together. The mixed-media torn paper collage aesthetic is a perfect metaphor for this verse… taking different, separated pieces and bringing them together into one cohesive design.
I chose specific doodle elements to represent how God “works things together” for us:
- Embroidery-inspired illustrations and doily heart: These symbolize the way God is “stitching” our lives together. God works with our messy seasons, and weaves together a beautiful pattern for His glory to shine through our lives.
- Little cute ducks and spring florals: Tulips and daffodils are symbols of new beginnings and the return of life after a long winter. They remind me that even after a season of regret, God can bring forth a spring season in our hearts.
- Bows and warm, vibrant colors: I used these to give the piece a sense of peace and gentleness. God doesn’t handle our stories with care, and walks with us on our journey towards healing.
Creating this illustration was a way for me to quiet the “what-ifs” in my head. It was a reminder that my life is in the hands of a Creator who knows exactly how to use every single scrap of my story.
He’s Not Finished With Your Story
If you’ve been looking back at parts of your life with regret, or if there are things you wish you could undo, may this be your reminder: God is not finished with your story.
He’s working. Weaving… And He’s still bringing purpose out of the parts you thought were useless. You don’t have to have it all figured out today. You can simply trust that He’s able to turn even the most broken moments into something good… in ways we may not fully see yet.
A Simple Reflection for Your Day
- Is there a specific memory or decision you’ve been “rewriting” in your mind lately? What would it look like to hand that to God today?
- Look back at the moments in your life… Can you name one way God has already turned a difficult moment into a source of growth or a reflection of His grace?
FAQ: Understanding Romans 8:28
Does “all things work together for good” mean only good things will happen?
No… it means that God is so powerful and so loving that He can take even the difficult, painful, or supposedly “bad” things and redirect them toward a purposeful, good end. It’s a promise of His sovereignty, and His love towards you, not a promise of a life without struggle.
How do I trust God when I feel like I’ve messed up His plan?
I like to remind myself that I’m not strong enough to mess things up beyond His control. When you keep your focus on the Lord, and invite Him into your everyday life, every step you take is aligned with His purpose for your life. Trusting Him starts with being honest about your regrets, and whatever’s on your heart… And then choosing to believe His Word over your feelings of failure.
What is the “good” that Romans 8:28 refers to?
The “good” isn’t always earthly comfort or success. But it doesn’t exclude that. God is a good Father, and He wants the best for us, in all aspects of our lives – whether it’s our spiritual growth, our needs, our healing etc.
Your Story is Safe in His Hands
You can let go of the pressure to be perfect today. Your story is being written by a perfect God, and He knows exactly how to make it beautiful. You are loved. You are seen. And you are being redeemed through His abundant love and grace towards you.
